BGC Ghana Champions Education with New Reading Resources

Published on October 2, 2025

The Boys and Girls Club of Ghana has long championed education, focusing on improving youth academic performance and building life skills. The organization identified a troubling issue that youth in the community needed assistance in improving their reading and writing skills and academic performance. Without access to age-appropriate books, students often struggle to build a strong foundation in reading and writing, skills that shape their academic journey and open doors to future opportunities.

Determined to bridge this gap, the Boys and Girls Club of Ghana partnered with World Youth Clubs through a mini-grant to invest in children’s education. On September 9, 2025, the Club delivered 53 English textbooks to Kindergarten 1-2 and Basic 1 students at the Ekumfi Akwansa Kokodo D/A Basic School. The books were distributed during a Parent-Teacher Association meeting, underscoring the importance of family and community involvement in education.

Club leaders and volunteers encouraged parents to provide their children with consistent support at home, both academically and emotionally. The findings from a recent survey on parental involvement in childhood learning at home were shared, sparking renewed reflection and commitment from parents. Parents resolved to take a more active role in their children’s learning, and teachers promised to help the children improve academically.

The immediate impact was visible as students received the books they needed to strengthen their English skills. But the long-term impact is even greater: this initiative has laid the foundation for stronger family engagement, greater teacher support, and a renewed focus on literacy as a pathway to empowerment. With plans to repeat the parental involvement survey in one month, the Boys and Girls Club of Ghana is ensuring that progress will be tracked and celebrated.
